The Steam Deck is a powerful handheld gaming device that can play a wide variety of games. However, the base storage of 64GB or 256GB may not be enough for some users. If you want to add more storage to your Steam Deck, you can install an SD card.

This blog post will show you how to install and format an SD card on your Steam Deck.

What SD card do I need?

The Steam Deck supports microSD cards that are formatted in the EXT4 file system. You can use any brand of microSD card, but it is important to make sure that it is at least a UHS-I card. UHS-I cards have faster read and write speeds than older microSD cards, which will improve the performance of your Steam Deck.

How to install an SD card
  1. Find the SD card slot on the bottom of the Steam Deck. It is located on the right side of the device, near the USB-C ports.
  2. Insert the SD card into the slot, making sure that it is facing the correct way. The label on the SD card should be facing up.
  3. You should hear a click when the SD card is properly inserted.
How to format an SD card
  1. Press the Steam button to open the Steam menu.
  2. Select “Settings” from the menu.
  3. Select “System” from the Settings menu.
  4. Scroll down to the “Format SD Card” option and select it.
  5. Confirm that you want to format the SD card and wait for the process to complete.
How to set the SD card as the default storage for games
  1. Once the SD card is formatted, you can set it as the default storage for your games. To do this, go back to the “Storage” settings and select the SD card as the default location for new games.
Tips
  • If you are using a new SD card, you may need to format it before you can use it.
  • Make sure that the SD card is inserted correctly into the slot. If it is not inserted correctly, it will not be recognized by the Steam Deck.
  • If you are having trouble formatting the SD card, you can try formatting it from a computer.
  • You can use the Steam Deck to move games from the internal storage to the SD card. To do this, go to the Library tab and select the game that you want to move. Then, click on the “Manage” button and select “Move”. Select the SD card as the destination and click on the “Move” button.
